On One 45650b – complete build from £1,000
As
one of the originals in creating the trail hardtail, the On One is the
definition of the 'ride anywhere' hardtail mountain bike.
Taking
130mm-150mm forks, this steel hardtail provides strength and durability to
tackle even the roughest of trails. It comes as a frame-only or a full build,
giving you plenty of options to get you out and shredding.
2.
Genesis Tarn – complete build from £1,200
If
you like to split your time between bike packing adventures and shredding your
local trails, then the Genesis Tarn is worth considering.
With
a slightly steeper head angle than most trail hardtails, the Tarn can climb and
explore with ease, taking up to 120mm travel. And with either 29” or
27.5"+ wheels, it makes short work of any obstacles in its way.
3.
Orange P7 – complete build from £1,400
Orange
are a pioneering British manufacturer, producing some killer bikes in 2017 –
with the P7 being no exception. This hardcore steel hardtail takes 140mm forks
and uses Reynolds 525 tubing for its strength.
One
of the best things about Orange is their high level of customisation. From a
range of frame and decal colours to a variety of forks and wheels, you can
fully personalise your ride so that it arrives at your doorstep pre-pimped.
4.
Cotic BFe – complete build from £1,499
Possibly
one of the most adaptable hardtails around, the Cotic BFe can take 100mm forks
all the way through to 160mm, making it perfect for a fun little XC spin, or a
long day out on the enduro and all mountain tracks. As Cotic describe it, “It’s
your trail bike with a bit of beef.”
Still
not sold on 27.5? Or prefer to stick to smaller wheels when spinning on steel?
Well, the Cotic not only comes as a 27.5 model, but they’re happily repping #26aintdead
too!
5.
Nukeproof Scout 275 – complete build from £1,600
Nukeproof
are already known for having a superb line of full suspension bikes, and it's
no surprise that this hardtail is just as good.
Taking
up to 140mm travel and a 66 degree head angle, the Scout is the perfect
hardtail, making little work of the ups, and being slack enough to really enjoy
the downs. It also has the clearance for 27.5 and 29er tyres – meaning you can
have the best of both worlds!
6.
Dartmoor Hornet – from £1,600
With
150mm travel, a playfully slack head angle, and embracing the 27.5+ size tyre,
the Hornet is perfect for all mountain and enduro riding.
The
Hornet has an aluminium frame, and comes as either frame-only, or a full build
with a Sram NX 1x11 setup and Suntour Auron forks, as well as coming in three
colourway options.
7.
Ragley Bluepig – complete build £1,700
Another
pioneer in the hardtail industry is Ragley. Their Bluepig is part of their
steel hardtail collection. Sold with 150mm RockShox Yari forks with a 1x11
chainset, this bike boasts the perfect balance between uphill and downhill.
Comes
in two colourways, and either as a whole frame build or frame-only.
8.
Transition Throttle – £1,800 for frame
Coming
from the makers of the beautiful downhill bike that is the TR500, Transition
have recently added two hardtails to their long bike line-up.
The
Throttle is the all mountain option, with 140mm travel upfront. Instead of
following the usual hardtail trend of steel, aluminium or titanium, Transition
went all in to create a carbon trail beast.
The
Throttle can be bought as a full build or frame-only, and comes in two
colourways: a buzzing black and yellow, or a stealth grey and black.
9.
Chromag Stylus – complete build from £2,190
This
aggressive hardtail will take you anywhere and do anything. Taking up to 170mm
travel, the Stylus is the ultimate all-rounder. From playing on jumps all day
to taking you down steep and techy trails, the Stylus will conquer anything you
throw at it.
The
stylus comes in two different frame build options (Sram GX or Eagle), as well
as a frame-only option, and has the ability to take 2.7” width tyres.
10.
Stanton Switchback – complete build £2,340
You
can’t talk about hardtails without Stanton making an appearance. Leading the
way in creating fun and unique hardtails, Stanton's range covers all hardtail
needs.
The
Switchback is a great all-round model, taking between 120mm-160mm travel as
well as being compatible with 27.5 and 27.5+ wheels. With a slack 65 degree headangle
and a short 415mm chainstay, this bike is super agile and playful on the
descents.
